Tech's four superpowers come with kryptonite
    July 18, 2018
By John Foley | July 18, 2018 It's hard to be a skeptic at a technology conference. The excitement about advances that really could change the world is contagious. VMware chief Pat Gelsinger extolled the "four superpowers" of tech this week - the cloud, mobile devices, connected gadgets and artificial intelligence. The problem is these powers come with a type of kryptonite the industry is reluctant to acknowledge. Combine Big Data with artificial intelligence and there is serious potential. Uber boss Dara Khosrowshahi and rival Lyft founder John Zimmer outlined parallel goals of democratizing travel - wrapping in public buses and trains with car-sharing and city-based bikes. Where data is clear, properly collected and interrogated sensibly - think forecasting disease patterns, for instance, or real-time heart-rate monitoring - AI has revolutionary power. Smart ideas are also coming at smaller scale, like Dallas-based Enseo, which is equipping teachers in Texas with Bluetooth-powered panic buttons that developed out of hotel-room entertainment systems. Hotel News - Opinion: The OTT Revolution
    July 18, 2018
By Mahak Mannan | July 18, 2018 With the rise of OTT services, global streaming of OTT video content reached a staggering 12.6 billion hours last year, according to online video analytics company Conviva. People everywhere continue to stream more OTT content every year, and it’s no surprise that we have come to expect these services to be available when we’re travelling as well and not just on our personal devices. The rapid increase in popularity of OTT services, and the consequential expectation that these services will become more readily accessible for users outside their homes, presents a sizeable opportunity for hotels to set themselves apart. The availability of OTT services in guest rooms has become a key differentiator for hotels around the world. In fact, according to Enseo, an in-room entertainment technology company, only 1% of hotel room occupants order paid video on demand during their stay, while 40% of people in hotel rooms with OTT services stream on the service. Voyage Dallas: Meet Vanessa Ogle of Enseo in Richardson
    October 25, 2017
October 25, 2017 Vanessa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. I founded Enseo in 2000. It was a 2-year process to start Enseo as I purchased a division I worked for from a large, silicon-valley backed, publicly-traded corporation. I founded the company on the idea of translating needs of our customers to a technology deliverable.  The customers we worked with early on included the TV Guide Channel, Marriott International, Target, Walmart, AMC Theaters, US Navy and others.  The business has evolved into a technology-based services organization, and we have grown tremendously in the last 4 years since that evolutionary shift. The company recently began a trial of its new Evolve product, which gives guestroom TVs access to an advanced user interface, a multitude of apps and the ability to stream to the TV. For Rowe, ease of use is paramount. All that is required from guests is to log onto the hotel’s Wi-Fi, open an app that works with Google Cast and select the “Cast” icon. “The hotel and DVD release windows aren’t too far apart anymore, so guests can go into the Google Movie store and buy or rent movies, or bring their own content, which is what they want to do,” Rowe said. Hotel Management: The age of BYOC: Bring Your Own Content
    January 25, 2017
by Elliott Mest | Jan 25, 2017 Vanessa Ogle, CEO of Enseo, a developer of set-top boxes and the only official partner of Netflix in the hospitality sector, expressed concerns regarding the industry’s ability to accommodate new technology to the degree that the market demands. She referred to the current state of network infrastructure in hotels as “archaic” in many places, and called for major upgrades in order to sustain the level of activity she anticipates in the near future. “These are not technology companies, they are hospitality companies, so educating them on the importance of network infrastructure has been a challenge,” Ogle said. “However, we are in a world of difference today compared to a year ago, and hotels are on track for improvements.” Read the Rest of the Article at Hotel Management

Cord Cutters: More People Watch Netflix in Hotels Than ESPN, Fox News, CNN, & More
    January 20, 2017
Luke Bouma | January 20, 2017 We always knew Netflix was popular but now we have some idea how popular it is when people have the option of Netflix or traditional pay TV. Enseo is a company that enables hotel TVs to access a wide range of apps and features. These TVs allow hotel guests to watch Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Crackle, and other services through their hotel TV. Enseo has released a report on what people were watching during the period of October 1, 2016, through December 30, 2016. According to this report, which looked at percentage of time viewing each channel and service, people watched Netflix more than ESPN, Fox News, CNN, FOX, CBS, ABC, and HGTV. YouTube was more popular than MSNB and TBS. Hulu and Pandora were more popular than AMC and Bravo, and Crackle was more popular than The Disney Channel and the Hallmark Channel. Awful Announcing: Report has Netflix second-most watched in hotels, ESPN third
    January 20, 2017
By Andrew Bucholtz | January 20, 2017 Offering ESPN has long been important for hotels, and recent data suggests ESPN is still one of the most-watched entertainment options there. However, it’s been passed by a surprising source: Netflix. This data comes from a report from Enseo, a company that enables hotel TVs to offer access to apps like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Crackle and more. Enseo put out the following graphic (via Cord Cutters News) showing what viewers watched on the hotel TVs they tracked from October 1 through December 30 of 2016, and Netflix and ESPN were #2 and #3 respectively, behind only NBC (which is the default channel for many hotel TVs): Read the Rest of the Article at Awful Announcing

Fansided: Netflix is more popular among hotel guests than ESPN, HBO
    January 20, 2017
by Nick Tylwalk | January 20, 2017 If you’re a hotelier looking to increase occupancy rates, maybe consider adding Netflix as an amenity. At the risk of dating myself, I remember when “Free HBO” was a thing that hotels used on signage to try to convince people to stay there instead of at a competitor. Now it seems that “Free Netflix” might work even better. Cord Cutters News passes along word of a new report by Enseo that suggests that when given the option, hotel guests spend more time watching Netflix than they do viewing popular cable channels like ESPN, Fox News and yes, HBO. In fact the only viewing option that beat Netflix at all was the local NBC affiliate, which Cord Cutters News explains is likely due to the fact that it’s the default channel when you turn on most hotel TVs. Around 1 percent of occupied hotel rooms order paid VOD, with 90 percent of those profits deriving from adult entertainment, Variety reports. Quartz: Netflix is even more popular than porn in hotel rooms
    January 12, 2017
By Ashley Rodriguez | January 12, 2017 Hotel guests would rather Netflix and chill than watch pay-per-view porn, new research shows. Adult entertainment has long been a profitable source of in-room entertainment for hotels, but the proliferation of high-speed internet, and guests who bring their own streaming devices, has reduced the need for video rentals at chains around the world. Just 1% of occupied hotel rooms around the world order video rentals on an average day, and adult programming accounts for 90% of those profits, Variety reported, citing research from Enseo, a firm that sells in-room entertainment technology to hotels. But, at hotels that offer Netflix on room TVs, 40% of rooms stream the service on a typical day, Enseo found. That’s 40 times the number of rooms that rent video at all. Hotel Management: Guestroom entertainment goals for 2017
    January 3, 2017
by Elliott Mest | Jan 3, 2017  Over time, the hotel guestroom has evolved to amplify the importance of the TV. Seeing as hotels follow and strive to improve on trends in the residential market, it only makes sense that the guestroom would mimic what guests have at home. Today’s new technology is seeing more advancements in handheld devices that carry and deliver content, and hotels are keen on capitalizing on that in 2017. Hotels are often stuck chasing the residential market when it comes to technology due to costs, but if money wasn’t an object what would operators want in their guestrooms? HOTEL MANAGEMENT spoke with four entertainment professionals to see what their wish lists for 2017 would look like if they could break the bank, and some of it isn’t as impossible as one might think. FierceVideo: Enseo CEO: Netflix, Hulu integration driving change for hotels’ in-room services
    October 26, 2016
by Samantha Bookman | Oct 26, 2016 Over-the-top services like Hulu and Netflix are starting to power up a completely different vertical from media and entertainment: the hospitality industry. The SVOD services are driving a sea change in many hotels’ marketing strategies and value-adds for consumers. Case in point is Enseo, a vendor that sells IP technology packages to a number of hotel chains. The company is in the midst of a massive ramp-up in sales of its combination Wi-Fi/entertainment/managed services products – the Enseo Room Operating Center, installed in each of a hotel customer’s guest rooms, and its “personal area networks,” which include room-specific Wi-Fi and Bluetooth audio capabilities. The number of in-room entertainment packages being installed by Enseo skyrocketed from about 300 hotels at the end of 2015 to over 700 in October – driven largely by the system’s OTT video features that include Netflix, Hulu and YouTube. Forbes: Netflix Is Coming To More Hotel Rooms: Can This Boost The Company's Revenues?
    August 19, 2016
By Trefis Team | August 19, 2016 Recently Netflix announced a partnership with hospitality company Enseo to provide the Netflix app in more hotels. Under this agreement, guests staying in hotels with devices powered by Enseo can watch Netflix content either by using their existing Netflix account or signing up for a new one. Enseo’s systems are available in 300 hotels in the U.S. and the company says that it has more than doubled its revenue every six months for the last two years. We believe Netflix’s expansion in the hospitality segment ensures that its loyal customers can watch its content more conveniently on a full screen TV, avoiding Wi-Fi constraints and small screen laptops when travelling. Easy availability of its content while traveling can also attract new consumers who can try the service while on vacation and convert into regular subscribers later. Netflix Expands Hospitality Offering Through Expanded Enseo Agreement
    August 17, 2016
Partnership enables Enseo® to offer Netflix® app to any hotel in the world where the Netflix service is available Richardson, TX – Aug 17, 2016 – Netflix and Enseo signed an agreement expanding Enseo’s rights to now distribute the Netflix application on select Enseo devices to any hotel under a specific contract with Enseo in any country where the Netflix service is available. "Our partnership with Enseo brings Netflix members a high quality viewing experience on their hotel room TV," said Paul Perryman, Director Business Development at Netflix. "Through our expanded agreement, now more hotels in more countries will be able to provide guests access to their favorite Netflix TV shows and movies on the in-room television, making their hotel room feel more like home." Enseo provides guests the best WiFi service with Enseo’s HSIA and HomeAwayFromHome™ personal area networks. Enseo’s advanced data analytics gathered data from several million occupied room nights this year proves Netflix is the guest’s favorite channel in all 19 hotel brands deployed today. This was consistent across all demographics from luxury guests to conference attendees and the ever elusive millennial traveler. “We are thrilled and honored that Netflix has chosen Enseo as their partner to offer Netflix on the in-room television for guests around the globe. It is a tremendous amount of trust. Enseo will ensure that the television itself behaves, the remote and on-screen menu is easy to navigate, and the network operates at the highest standards at each Enseo property, giving Netflix members the great streaming content and viewing experience they have come to expect. tnooz: As Marriott and other brands tap the Internet of Things, Enseo grows
    February 25, 2016
By Juliana Shallcross | Feb 25, 2016 When it comes to hotel rooms, the Internet of Things (IoT) is more than just a universal remote. Nearly a decade ago, smart tablets began popping up on the nightstands in hotel rooms, giving guests the ability to control room functions such as lighting, curtains, and temperature all from one place (and from the comfort of the bed.) In 2009, a major roll-out of these tablets occurred in Las Vegas at MGM Resorts’ City Center hotels, using Control4 technology. UPDATE: (After publication, we learned that Enseo’s hardware, such as remote controls, and its software can be found in every room at City Center hotels. Enseo integrated with Control4 to manage controls like curtains, temperature, etc.) Today, the connection of previously ordinary devices to the internet has evolved further. Time: How to Watch Netflix Free in Your Hotel Room
    December 29, 2015
By JOHN PATRICK PULLEN | December 29, 2015 In the years before inexpensive big screen, high-definition televisions hit the market, it used to be a treat to stay in a hotel. Typically the rooms featured televisions that were bigger than what you’d likely have at home, they almost all had cable (including movie channels like HBO), and often you could order pay-per-view movies that were either still in the theater, or wouldn’t be available on video for at least a year. But now it’s a drag to overnight away from home. We may be in the golden age of television, but if you’re stuck in a hotel with crappy or too-expensive Wi-Fi, you might as well be living in the ’70s. These days, some of the best television isn’t even on television — it’s on streaming video services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Prime. Read the Rest of the Article at TIME

Crackle, Hulu, Pandora, and YouTube are also available through the set-top box's menu. Marriott guests can also connect personal devices to the set-top box via Bluetooth. PC Mag: Hands On With Netflix and YouTube at Marriott Hotels
    July 14, 2015
By Sascha Segan | July 14, 2015 Hotel pay per view is dying. Hotels have understood this for a while; as far back as 2006, Marriott loaded "jack packs" into many of its rooms to let you pipe your laptop through the TV. Now, a range of hotels use smart TVs, set-top boxes, docks or Apple TVs to let you pipe video from your laptop or smartphone into your TV. Marriott's taking a different approach. Using set-back boxes from LG and Enseo, hooked up to LG TVs, the chain lets you log into Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, YouTube, or Pandora right on your hotel room TV. I checked one out at the New York Marriott East Side, where every room is now equipped with the streaming boxes. Read the Rest of the Article at PC Mag
